LAESI® MS Services

Protea Biosciences is the only industry provider of LAESI®-MS Services. LAESI-MSI is an ionization technique for mass spectrometry in which the natural water content of a sample is used as a matrix for sample introduction into the mass spectrometer. As an ambient ionization technique, a wide variety of sample types can be analyzed including those that are vacuum incompatible.

Two dimensional and three dimensional imaging services are available at Protea Biosciences.  Tissue samples are mounted on standard glass slides and analyzed using the LAESI DP-1000 System connected to a variety of mass spectrometers, depending on the analytical needs of the project. Bacterial colonies are analyzed directly on standard growth medium plates, and cell cultures are analyzed directly after pelleting. Standard data reports contain up to five contour plots of desired m/z of interest, as well as well as representative MS fingerprints from the entire sample and/or select regions. Further contour plots and MS/MS confirmation can also be performed.

Depth profiling is performed by targeting the laser at the same location with multiple laser pulses. Each laser pulse provides one layer of information from the sample.

In addition to traditional tissue imaging, other sample types include, bacterial colony profiling and colony dynamic monitoring, cell culture profiling, contact lens imaging and analysis, biomaterial characterization and analysis, biofilm characterization and imaging, other material characterization and imaging.
